The latest show offered by Audible Theater is more than a play or a musical but might be categorized as an impactful theatrical event. The production features a fusion of several genres of music created by live looping, an engaging book with a profound message, and incredible performances from two multi-talented storytellers. This combination elevates the production to another level. The two performers, Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, also wrote the book, music and lyrics, which is based on the Southern Underground Railroad that helped enslaved people seek freedom by traveling South to Mexico. It is a lesser-known part of American history that certainly deserves to be told and studied.
We first meet Henry (an intense and charismatic Nygel D. Robinson), born and raised in Kentucky but sold off to slavery, ending up on a plantation in Texas picking cotton. He is seduced by the owner’s wife, and although nothing happens, he is accused and threatened by the master, which ends in a life-or-death situation, leaving Henry branded as a murderer. He begins his journey trying to seek freedom by crossing the Rio Grande to Mexico, where slavery has been abolished. He washes up on the shoreline of Mexico and is found by Carlos (an amiable and sensible Brian Quijada), who brings him to his farm and helps with his recovery. Carlos is an ex-Army medic, haunted by memories from his service in the Mexican American War. They form a bond and friendship that helps them navigate their differences. The remainder of the story is no surprise, but the twists, turns, drama and emotion that flood this journey feed into the fast pace established by the deft direction of David Mendizabal.
Mr. Robinson imbues Henry with sensitivity and awareness portraying him as strong, intelligent and vulnerable. His vocals and musicianship are exceptional. Mr. Quijada creates a hardened and hurt persona with a menacing grin, then turns and exposes his other side, packed with compassion and ingenuity. His comedic flair captures the audience and at times brings a welcome relief to the tension. The chemistry between these two actors is a driving force. They are always in control, consistently knowing when to give and when to take. They not only make these characters real, but they also fill them with attributes that should represent all humanity. Their characters are clearly influenced by the past, exist in the present, and aspire to a better future.
Kudos must be given to Mikhail Fiksel, who is credited as Looping Systems Architect and Sound Designer and should be recognized as the structural support of this production. Scenic Design by Riw Rakkuchon is flexible and practical, and when bathed in the Lighting Design by Mextly Couzin, many locations and moods are created. This production is a fascinating example of how music, movement, sound, comedy, drama, and storytelling can be woven together to create an entertaining evening of theatre, and at the same time relay an important and relevant message. It is an event not to be missed!
