David Campbell: Back From Oz

Just having David Campbell back in Manhattan is a gift. Being able to hear him perform is a bonus. Sharing some time with him at the Café Carlyle while he is performing constitutes nothing less than a moment of grace.

    

David Campbell's current engagement at the Café Carlyle with musical director Christopher Denny and bass player Jered Egan wraps up on March 23rd and leaves his audience hoping it won't be two more years before he returns.

The David Campbell one experiences at the Café Carlyle is a confident, mature, sophisticated performer with a solid and endearing center. He and his work are imbued with a refreshing sense of honesty and clarity which make every song he sings echo with integrity and class. David Campbell clearly understands every lyric he sings and his interpretations and musical stylings are right on target.

Among the highlights of Mr. Campbell's "Back From Oz" are Harburg and Van Heusen's "Old Devil Moon," Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles," the Bobby Darin Medley with a chillingly unique interpretation of "Mack The Knife," and John Bucchino's "If I Ever Say I'm Over You" and "Taking The Wheel."

Perhaps most indicative of David Campbell's continuing journey are two songs from his program which touch the soul of the post September 11th audience in profound ways. He gifts and graces his listeners with "What About Me" (Frost/Frost) and Lerner and Lowe's "From This Day On" and shares both his existential pursuit and his astounding sense of hope with audiences hungering for a meaningful sense of future.

As always Christopher Denny surpasses expectation and Jered Egans fingers find spaces between strings we imagine never existed.

At the Café Carlyle in the Carlyle Hotel, Madison Avenue at 76th Street from February 26th until March 23rd, 2002. Performances Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8:45 PM with late shows on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10:45 PM. There is a $75.00 cover charge, no minimum. Dinner is served from 6:30 PM.
